The molars and premolars in the back of your mouth typically have a lot of contour on the biting surface. Sometimes even the best toothbrush can struggle to remove all of the food particles from these teeth.

This puts the biting surface of these teeth at risk for the buildup of plaque and the potential tooth decay. Sealants are used more often for young children and teenagers. When decay forms on these surfaces it usually requires a large filling. So protecting a young person’s teeth improves the chances of them experiencing fewer problems later in life.

However if during your regular checkup your dentist or hygienist notices excess food particles or plaque developing on your back teeth, we may recommend a sealant procedure.

Sealants are a simple plastic-resin based compound that your dentist carefully paints onto the biting surface of your back teeth. When dried this resin creates a thin protective layer that blocks food particles and plaque from direct contact with the enamel of your teeth.

The sealant procedure is simple and can sometimes be done after your regular checkup. The dentist merely paints the resin on the back teeth then quick cures them for total adhesion. Once cured the sealants are very durable and can last for several years.

Most people can’t even notice that there are sealants on their teeth. In future dental cleanings your dentist will monitor the sealants and may recommend reapplying them.
