What is Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease, also commonly known as gum disease, is primarily caused by the bacteria found in plaque and tartar. Gum diseases, such as gingivitis, can cause irritated or inflamed gums, and if left untreated, gums that pull away from the teeth. If still left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to the loss of bone, tooth or gum tissue.
The symptoms of gum disease can be difficult to detect, but we invite you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mario Roybal if you are experiencing one or more of the following symptoms:
- Persistent bad breath
- Painful chewing
- Swollen, tender or red gums
- Gums that bleed easily
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
Our friendly dentist will be able to diagnose periodontal disease, and can offer the appropriate treatments.
What is a Periodontal Screening?
Because the bacteria that causes gum disease will always return to your gums, we recommend visiting our office at least once every six months for a cleaning and dental checkup. During this checkup, our dentist may include a periodontal screening to check the health of your gums. During a periodontal screening, Dr. Mario Roybal will inspect your gums and poke them to see how easily they bleed. Depending on your individual needs, other steps may need to be taken. Our team is devoted to caring for your oral health, and we invite you to contact us today if you have any more questions about gum disease like gingivitis in Biloxi, Mississippi.
